Disclaimer: Blood Sample Collection Method
Finger-prick blood sampling is a less invasive alternative to venepuncture and is widely accepted for collecting capillary blood for certain tests. However, please note that results obtained from Finger -prick samples may differ slightly from those obtained through traditional venepuncture due to factors such as sample size, collection technique and individual variability. While we take every precaution to ensure accuracy, it is important to consider the specific circumstances of the sample collection when interpreting results, especially for tests where small variations can be significant. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the sample collection method or its potential impact on your results, please consult your healthcare provider or the BioSmart laboratory.
SAMPLE COLLECTION INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1
Place the contents of the sample collection kit on a clean surface.
STEP 2
Write your name on the tube sticker & complete the form at the bottom of this page.
STEP 3
Twist the lid off the blood collection tube then stand it upright.
STEP 4
Next, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
STEP 5
Choose a finger. Your non-dominant hand’s middle or ring finger often works best.
STEP 6
Add warm water to a bowl or sink then submerge and soak your preferred hand for 2 – 3 minutes.
STEP 7
Standing up is advised. To stimulate blood flow, extend your preferred arm and swing it around in a circle 5 to 10 times.
STEP 8
Wipe the chosen finger with the alcohol swab. Since blood will not form a drop on a moist finger, ensure your finger dries completely.
STEP 9
Select a finger-prick blood collection device. Rotate its protective cover once before carefully removing it. Do not use the device if its cover is loose or missing.
STEP 10
While standing, place your palm on a hard surface. Firmly press the finger-prick blood collection device diagonally on the side of your chosen finger until it releases.
STEP 11
Wipe away the first drop of blood. Still standing, hold your arm downwards and gently massage your finger from the base towards the fingertip until a drop forms. Do not squeeze.
STEP 12
Pick up the blood collection tube and hold your punctured finger above the opening to catch the drops. Fill the tube up to its upper line, repeating the massaging technique if necessary.
NOTE:
If it takes longer than 2 minutes to fill the collection tube, simply choose a new finger and repeat Steps 4 to 12 with a fresh finger-prick blood collection device to collect more drops.
STEP 13
Replace the collection tube’s cap and press it firmly until you hear it click.
STEP 14
Wipe your finger with the swab, wash and dry your hands and apply the plaster.
STEP 15
Do not shake the tube. Only invert it gently, at least 10 times.
STEP 16
Place the collection tube inside the biohazard return bag and seal it properly.
STEP 17
Return the biohazard bag to the BioSmart box and place the box inside the envelope, along with the completed form on this leaflet.
