From Symptoms To Solutions: How Professional Testing Can Reveal Hidden Allergens

As spring arrives in South Africa, many people experience their most challenging allergy season. However, while pollen-filled air triggers obvious seasonal symptoms, allergies extend far beyond springtime discomfort, affecting millions year-round through food sensitivities, skin reactions, and environmental triggers.

“Spring allergies are usually just the tip of the iceberg,” says Tyron Hansen, Business Development Manager at BioSmart Lab. “You wake to spring sunshine and nature in full bloom, but instead of enjoying it, you’re shut inside with tissues and antihistamines. Meanwhile, your stomach acts up after breakfast, and that mysterious rash on your arms is back. Sound familiar?”

Hansen explains that many people assume that their symptoms stem from a single source, like pollen or food preservatives. However, BioSmart Lab’s test results often reveal they’ve actually been living with multiple triggers they never connected to their symptoms.

    Why It’s Worth Looking Deeper

Professional allergen tests measure specific antibodies in your blood to identify how your body reacts to different substances. This matters because what looks like “seasonal” hay fever might actually be a mix of environmental, food, and even skin-related triggers.

“Our immune systems are like complicated alarm systems,” explains Hansen. “They go off loudly, but without proper testing, you only hear the siren – you don’t see what’s actually setting it off.”

A major source of confusion is the difference between allergies and intolerances. Both of which can make you feel unwell, but function very differently:

    • Allergies: They set off the immune system through immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, causing anything from a runny nose or itchy eyes to potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, often within minutes of exposure.
    • Intolerances: These don’t set off your immune system, but they can still cause digestive discomfort like bloating or nausea, and while not dangerous, they can nevertheless affect daily life.

“Knowing which is which can be the key to finally feeling better,” he adds.

Everyday Triggers You Might Be Missing

Allergies aren’t always obvious or seasonal. Many people live with daily discomfort without realising what’s behind it. Hansen provides some of the most common sources of ongoing allergic reactions.

    • Environmental triggers: Dust mites, mould spores, pet dander, and certain plants can cause year-round congestion, itchy eyes, or skin flare-ups.
    • Food sensitivities: That heavy, bloated feeling after meals could point to, for example, wheat, rice and corn sensitivity, or even certain food combinations.
    • Skin reactions: Chronic eczema or rashes are sometimes triggered by hidden allergens, not simply “sensitive skin.”
    • Allergic clues in children: Kids often can’t articulate their symptoms. What might appear to be frequent colds, skin rashes, or trouble concentrating could be subtle signs of allergies.

“Trying to figure out if your symptoms are caused by allergens through elimination diets, behavioural adjustments, or symptom tracking can take months and still leave you without answers, notes Hansen. “Blood-based testing provides a faster alternative by measuring IgE antibodies – the proteins your immune system releases when it detects threats.”

    Taking Back Control

BioSmart Lab’s advanced blood panels analyse these IgE proteins across multiple allergens simultaneously. These tests can be purchased online and provide accurate, quantitative results without the risk of sparking reactions or being influenced by medication use.

Some people discover that they need to remove wheat to manage food allergies. Others learn that their “pet allergy” is actually a dust mite sensitivity. Parents often find their child’s mid-afternoon meltdowns are directly linked to specific food triggers at lunch.

“The goal isn’t just to manage symptoms – it’s to restore people’s quality of life,” emphasises Hansen. “Once you understand what your body is reacting to, you can move from frustrating guesswork to making informed choices, giving you control of your health back,” he concludes.

  • Silent Signs: What Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer

Silent Signs: What Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer

Silent Signs: What Every Woman Should Know About Cervical Cancer

What if your body was trying to tell you something important, but you couldn’t hear it? Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women aged 15 to 44 in South Africa. Known as one of the ‘silent’ cancers, it can develop slowly over years – often without whispering a single symptom – with signs only appearing once the cancer has begun to grow into nearby tissue.

Most cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus transmitted through sexual contact.

While many HPV infections resolve on their own, some can persist and lead to changes in cervical cells that may become cancerous over time. Due to these changes, which are frequently undetected, awareness and proactive cervical cancer screening are essential, as an early diagnosis gives women the best chance for successful treatment and long-term remission.

While the risk of HPV-related cervical cancer is lower without sexual contact, it’s not 100% absent. “Given the nature of cervical cancer, women—even those who are not sexually active—should undergo screening,” says Tyron Hansen, Business Development Manager at BioSmart. This is supported by World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, which recommend regular cervical health checks for women aged 30 and older who haven’t had a hysterectomy, regardless of sexual history.

One of the key steps in early detection is to stay vigilant and pay attention to any unusual changes in the body. Because even if they do appear, they’re often subtle and easy to overlook. These four symptoms should not be ignored:

    1. Unusual Vaginal Bleeding
Bleeding between periods, after sex, or following menopause can be a sign of abnormal changes in the cervix. While there are many possible causes, persistent or unexplained bleeding should be checked out.

    1. Pelvic Pain
Ongoing pelvic discomfort that isn’t linked to your menstrual cycle may signal inflammation or early cell changes, so it’s important to take note of patterns.

    1. Pain During Intercourse
While pain during sex can have many causes, newly occurring or persistent discomfort may signal cervical irritation or indicate other underlying changes.

    1. Unusual Vaginal Discharge
A watery, bloody, or unpleasant-smelling discharge that’s different from your normal pattern could be an early warning sign.

“Ultimately, it’s about trusting your instincts – you know your body best and when any abnormalities occur, seeking medical advice promptly can make all the difference,” Hansen stresses.

If cervical cancer progresses beyond the preliminary stages, symptoms may become more pronounced and can include:

    • Persistent lower back or abdominal pain
    • Swelling in the legs
    • Changes in bladder or bowel habits
    • Fatigue or unexplained weight loss

Whilst these might not always mean cancer, they do warrant a conversation with a healthcare provider.

“Unfortunately, when it comes to screening, which can identify precancerous changes and is one of the most effective forms of prevention, many women delay or avoid traditional testing altogether,” notes Hansen. “This can be due to physical discomfort, time constraints, embarrassment, or uncertainty about what it involves or whether it’s necessary. That’s one reason BioSmart developed our self-sampling HPV test: to offer a discreet, accessible way to screen for high-risk HPV types at home, without needing to visit a clinic or a doctor’s referral.

“Additionally,” he continues, “the WHO has stated that ‘self-collection of a sample for HPV testing, which may be a preferred choice for women, has been shown to be as reliable as samples collected by healthcare providers.”

Hansen emphasises that screening should fit into women’s lives, not disrupt them. “With BioSmart’s at-home HPV test, the kit arrives at your doorstep, the sample is collected at your convenience, and results are delivered confidentially by email within days. It’s tailored for women who prefer privacy and convenience.”

He concludes: “Cervical cancer may be quiet, but awareness doesn’t have to be. Every test taken is a step toward better prevention and taking control of your health, and we’re committed to making that as accessible and affordable as possible for every woman.”

Skip The Waiting Room: 4 Essential At-Home Health Tests For Women

Too often, women put the needs of others ahead of their own, especially when it comes to the health and well-being of their loved ones. They schedule paediatric appointments around work meetings, research specialists for ageing parents, remind partners to book their annual check-ups and ensure their kids don’t miss their six-monthly dental appointments. Yet when it comes to their own wellness visits, too often they postpone them in favour of something more pressing.

The truth is, your health is your greatest asset and making time for checkups isn’t selfish. It’s smart, necessary, and often life-changing. So as we celebrate Women’s Month, maybe it’s time to flip the script and remember that putting your health first isn’t a luxury. It’s vital – and one of the best gifts you can give your family.

It starts with being proactive. “One of the most powerful things anyone can do for their health is to catch any irregularities early – before they become full-blown issues. And testing for them doesn’t have to be a hassle, says Tyron Hansen, Business Development Manager at BioSmart, a clinical pathology lab offering affordable at-home testing and fast disease screening. “In fact, the biggest barrier to regular health checks isn’t necessarily cost or complexity – it’s convenience.

This is borne out by recent NIH studies showing that women offered at-home cervical cancer screening kits were more than twice as likely to complete their screenings compared to those receiving only clinic-based reminders.

Hansen outlines four key at-home tests that offer a practical starting point for taking charge of your health, whilst reminding users to always consult a doctor if any results raise concerns.

    1. Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is one of the most important – and most preventable – health risks women can screen for. It often develops without symptoms and is usually caused by high-risk HPV strains that many carry unknowingly. The good news? Early detection means you can act before it ever develops into cancer. With self-sampling kits, you can collect your own sample safely and privately at home, no clinic visit needed, and results are typically back within days. One easy step that could protect your health, your fertility, even your life.

    2.  Hormonal
Hormonal changes can cause mood swings, fatigue, weight gain, and irregular periods which many women chalk up to stress or age. In truth, hormone imbalances are common and treatable, but left unchecked, they can affect fertility, bone health, mood, and mental well-being. A simple test measures hormone levels like17-β-Estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA – all crucial to sleep, metabolism, and reproductive health – and brings helpful clarity.  So, whether you’re planning a family or just want to feel like yourself again, this is an easy way to start.

    3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Many STIs show no symptoms but are far from harmless. Left untreated, infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and syphilis can quietly cause long-term damage, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and a higher risk of HIV. So why don’t more women get tested? Often, it’s fear of judgement, embarrassment, or just the discomfort of a clinic visit. At-home STI tests change that. Collect a vaginal swab or finger-prick blood sample (test dependent), in your own time and space, then send it to a certified lab. Results arrive in a few days. No awkwardness. Just clarity – empowering you to take control.

    4. Stress and Adrenal Health
Stress impacts more than your mood. It disrupts sleep, digestion, hormone balance, and immune resilience. For many women, chronic stress is a daily reality. This pressure can manifest as irregular menstrual cycles, fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, and burnout. If you feel constantly tired or overwhelmed, adrenal testing – which measures cortisol and related hormone levels – offers insight into determining if medical assistance is required. All it takes is a saliva test performed four times throughout a single day to measure your cortisol levels and determine if they’re within normal range.”

Women are expected to keep going, to be everything to everyone,” Hansen notes. “But your body deserves attention, too. These tests give you real data and clarity – a genuine starting point for self-care. You don’t need to wait for something to go wrong or feel unwell to make your health a priority. Testing isn’t about fear. It’s about freedom. And it starts with knowing – because knowledge is power,” he concludes.

5 Reasons To Check Your Sexual Health Status – Because Silence Isn’t Safety

5 Reasons To Check Your Sexual Health Status – Because Silence Isn’t Safety

It doesn’t always come with a warning sign. No rash, no tingle, no discharge. In fact, for most people living with a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), it doesn’t start with any obvious symptoms at all, especially in the early stages.

That’s the tricky thing about sexual health. It often whispers, not shouts. According to the World Health Organisation, more than a million STIs are contracted every single day, most without people even knowing it. In South Africa, STIs remain one of the top public health concerns, but stigma, shame, and silence continue to cloud the conversation.

Sexual Health Week runs from 9–15 September 2025, and BioSmart, a clinical pathology lab committed to providing easy and accessible diagnostics for all South Africans, is asking a question that matters to every sexually active person: “When was the last time you got tested?”

Not because something’s wrong. Not because you are worried. Because sexual wellness starts with knowing – not guessing your status.

“We’re conditioned to believe that no pain means no problem,” says Tyron Hansen, Business Development Manager for BioSmart, “and most people wait for symptoms before they act when it comes to their health. But with STIs, silence isn’t safety – many are often asymptomatic for years. Testing is how we take control, before risks like infertility or pregnancy, or other complications ever come into play.

Think you’re low-risk? Wondering if testing applies to you?

Hansen shares five reasons to take the test – even when you might look and feel the picture of health:

    1. You’ve had unprotected sex (even just once!)
Whether it was a heat-of-the-moment decision or a condom that broke without you realising, unprotected sex increases your risk. And it’s not only HIV to think about -chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and HPV are all quietly widespread in South Africa.

    2. You’ve started seeing someone new
STIs from previous partners can linger undetected. Starting a new relationship?  Make testing part of the conversation and part of the trust you’re building. It’s a sign of care – not judgement.

    3. You’re ready to stop using condoms or start a family
Whether it’s a new relationship or a long-term one, deciding to stop using condoms is a big step. So is planning for a baby. Both deserve a joint sexual health check – not assumptions. Some STIs can affect your ability to conceive or impact your baby’s health. Knowing your status early means you can treat anything that could adversely affect your plans.

    4. You’ve noticed some physical changes (even if they’re minor!)
Painful sex. Unusual discharge. Slight itching or discomfort. They may seem small, but they’re worth checking out. Don’t brush them off.

    5. You haven’t been tested in over a year
No matter your relationship status, routine annual testing keeps you in control of your health, just like a pap smear or a cholesterol check. STI screening isn’t about judgment – it’s about knowing where you stand.

“Shame is still louder than science,” notes Hansen. “In many South African households, speaking about sex is taboo, never mind STIs! This is often due to cultural norms or gender roles. So, when you walk into a clinic or pharmacy and ask for a test, it can feel like a confession.”

He explains that part of BioSmart’s mission is to remove the awkwardness and stigma from STI testing. Their discreet, easy-to-use self-sampling kits can be ordered online and completed in the privacy of your own home – no need to explain yourself to anyone. Samples are collected at your convenience, analysed by HPCSA-registered scientists, and 99.99% accurate, confidential results are emailed directly to you within a few days.

“We are transforming testing into a practical, empowering act of self-care so people can take control of their health,” Hansen concludes. “Because being healthy is about knowing you’re okay… and taking steps to stay that way.”
