What is a Paternity Test?
A paternity test is a way to find out if a man is the biological father of a child. The process involves collecting DNA samples from the man, the child, and sometimes the mother. These samples undergo comparison in a lab to see if they match, which accurately determines paternity.
How Does a Paternity Test Work?
A paternity test compares DNA samples from a child and a potential father collected through cheek swabs. The BioSmart lab analyzes these samples, examining specific genetic markers. If the markers match, it suggests the alleged father is the biological father. Results usually exceed 99.9% accuracy.
The accuracy of a paternity test can be affected by:
- the quality of DNA samples collected – please follow the package insert instructions carefully!
- the involvement of the mother – a sample from both parents is not necessary, but will help if possible.
- genetic variations or mutations – which although rare, may be present in the genes that we use to interpret the relationship, making the interpretation more complicated.
Remember a good quality sample is required for accurate results – but the process is easy & painless. All you need to do is follow the instructions inside the sample collection kit.
At BioSmart we use a state of the art DNA analysis platform & tests. Analysis is performed using the most advanced software to ensure accuracy. We perform the tests & analysis ourselves, and never use other labs that may not be as advanced as ours.
Understanding the Results
Understanding the results of a paternity test is relatively straightforward. If the test confirms that the man is the biological father, the results typically show a high probability of paternity, often exceeding 99.9%. This means it’s highly likely he’s the father of the child. However, if the results show a probability of paternity below a certain threshold, usually 99%, it suggests that the tested man is not the biological father.
Remember!
Legal Implications of Paternity Testing
Paternity testing can have legal consequences concerning child support, custody, and visitation rights. If the test shows the father is the biological parent, he may have to help financially and gain legal rights. If the test proves he’s not the father, then he won’t have to support the child anymore.
Remember, these results can have a massive emotional impact and discovering unexpected paternity results may cause distress and disrupt families.
BioSmart Paternity Test – the Sample Kit
The kit has four mouth swabs – two for the father and two for the child. Collect samples at home and send them to the BioSmart lab for testing. Take the samples first thing in the morning before eating, drinking, or brushing teeth.
Carefully follow the instructions when you get the kit.
Paternity Test results will take 5 – 7 days.
