WHAT?

At-home blood sample collection device for measuring levels of specific antibodies in your blood that are elevated if you are allergic to gluten and/or milk. Results are provided within 24 hours of the sample reaching the laboratory.

WHY?

Cow’s milk and gluten allergies are commonly seen together. Ingestion can cause reactions and/or gut-based symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps, leaky gut syndrome, acid reflux, skin problems, nausea and diarrhoea – similar to celiac disease. Milk or gluten intolerance is not the same as an allergy to milk or gluten. If it is an allergy, your immune system sees it as hostile, triggering immune reactions in an attempt to eradicate the foreign invader. An intolerance is a non-immunological response triggered by digestive issues.

Allergy symptoms differ in severity and can range from mild rashes or itching to nausea or severe breathing issues. An intolerance may bring discomfort and pain, including bloating, cramps and diarrhoea but will not be life-threatening. It is therefore important to identify food allergies first.

WHO?

Intolerance to cow’s milk is caused by an inability to break down a sugar called lactose that is found in cow’s milk. An individual without the enzyme lactase will not be able to break down lactose and will therefore experience problems digesting these sugars. This issue can result in stomach pain, bloating, diarrhoea and other gut problems. Likewise, people who are gluten intolerant, may experience symptoms similar to those with celiac disease but do not have the intestinal damage or antibodies found in those with celiac disease.

Identifying these intolerances and removing them from your diet through simple lifestyle changes can greatly improve your quality of life.

People with cow’s milk and/or gluten allergies who eat milk and/or gluten have higher than normal levels of certain antibodies in their blood. These antibodies are produced by the immune system as it sees milk and gluten as threats.

HOW?

This sample kit contains a finger-prick blood collection device, along with clear instructions. Samples collected at home are couriered to and tested at the BioSmart accredited pathology laboratory.

Blood is tested for the following IgE antibodies which will be elevated if you have a gluten and/or milk allergy or normal if you are intolerant:

  • Cow’s Milk
  • Alpha-Lactalbumin
  • Beta-Lactoglobulin
  • Casein
  • BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin)
  • Gluten

TESTS EXPLAINED

The amount of each antibody is measured which gives insight into the severity of the reaction to milk and/or gluten. Your milk and gluten report will come in an easy-to-understand format with a detailed explanation of results, what they mean and your next steps.

FINGER-PRICK KIT

For the Collection of Serum (Portion of Blood) for Testing

Disclaimer: Blood Sample Collection Method

Finger-prick blood sampling is a less invasive alternative to venepuncture and is widely accepted for collecting capillary blood for certain tests. However, please note that results obtained from finger-prick samples may differ slightly from those obtained through traditional venepuncture due to factors such as sample size, collection technique and individual variability. While we take every precaution to ensure accuracy, it is important to consider the specific circumstances of the sample collection when interpreting results, especially for tests where small variations can be significant. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the sample collection method or its potential impact on your results, please consult your healthcare provider or the BioSmart laboratory.
