WHAT?
At-home sample collection device for monitoring levels of hormones that can indicate causes of any one of the following: amenorrhea / irregular menses, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperandrogenism and being overweight. Laboratory results are provided within 5 days.
WHY?
Endocrine disorders that commonly affect women of reproductive age are characterised by hormonal imbalances, specifically an increase in androgen and insulin resistance which can disrupt the normal functioning of the ovaries.
WHO & WHEN?
Women with amenorrhea / irregular menses, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperandrogenism or who are overweight may have hormonal imbalances that cause a range of symptoms, which can vary from person to person.
Common symptoms include:
- Irregular or absent menstrual periods
- Excessive hair growth (hirsutism)
- Acne
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Fertility problems
Insulin resistance is a common feature of PCOS which means the body’s cells have a reduced ability to respond to insulin, leading to higher insulin levels in the blood. This can contribute to weight gain and difficulty managing blood sugar levels. It is associated with an increased risk of developing certain health conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So, women diagnosed with PCOS should have regular health checks to ensure they are managed correctly.
Although there is no cure for PCOS, symptoms and complications can be managed through various approaches.
Lifestyle approaches such as maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise and a balanced diet can help improve symptoms and reduce insulin resistance. Medications can be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and manage symptoms such as excessive hair growth or acne.
