WHAT?

A test for checking liver function using a blood sample collected at participating Clicks Clinics. Results are provided within 24 hours of the sample reaching the laboratory.

WHY?

The liver plays a significant role in metabolism, digestion, detoxification and elimination of substances from the body. A liver function test can help diagnose and monitor liver disease or damage by looking at liver enzymes.

WHO & WHEN?

If you are on chronic medication or consume alcohol regularly or excessively from time to time, or both, it is a good idea to check the health of your liver. If your liver loses its ability to function properly, you are likely to experience:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Itchy skin
  • Chronic fatigue

More serious liver damage will result in symptoms that can include:

HOW?

  2. Book your sample collection at select Clicks Clinics (you don’t pay for the sample collection service)
  3. Bring the receipt for this test to your selected Clicks Clinic appointment.  A trained phlebotomist will collect your sample and send it directly to the BioSmart pathology laboratory for analysis.
  4. After that, you’ll receive the results via email.

The analysis will determine the levels of:

  • Bilirubin (Total)
  • Bilirubin (Direct)
  • Total Protein
  • Albumin
  • Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
  • Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
