WHY?

The kidneys filter waste from the blood which is then expelled from the body through urine. The kidneys are also responsible for producing vitamin D and the hormones that regulate blood pressure.

WHO & WHEN?

Doctors may suggest kidney function tests for people experiencing the following unexplained symptoms:

• Muscle cramps
• Lack of appetite
• Unintentional weight loss
• Shortness of breath
• Tiredness
• Frequent urination
• Blood in urine or really dark urine

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK), people with a high risk of developing kidney disease should undergo regular kidney function tests. These include people with:

• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Heart disease
• A family history of kidney failure

Regular kidney function tests also help diagnose kidney disorders in their early stages, which makes treatment and management much easier.

HOW?

This sample kit contains a urine sample collection device and clear instructions. With it you can collect a sample at home. Samples are couriered to and tested at the BioSmart accredited pathology laboratory.

Urine is tested for:

• Albumin
• Creatinine
• Electrolyte: Sodium
• Electrolyte: Potassium

Results can provide information about general kidney function and/or possible kidney damage. Urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) is used to assess kidney damage.
